A builder of Nation: An Icon of Discipline

In 1955 Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, proud son of India was showered with two more prestigious recognitions: one Knighthood from the British government and second, even more than that, ‘Bharat Ratna’ award from the Indian government. The whole world knows Sir M Visvesvaraya as the man behind landmark dams, bridges, industries, and institutions. More than all these, Sir M V was the epitome of discipline, personal integrity, and work excellence. As Diwan of Mysore State ( 1912-1918), he helped change the landscape of Mysore State in terms of facilities and developmental work. Krishnaraja Sagar Dam ( Kannambadi) stands out as an engineering marvel even today. Likewise, ‘Bombay State’, ‘Hyderabad State’ and many other princely States were the beneficiaries of Sir MV’s advice, ideas, and inspiration.

Jawaharlal Nehru, first Prime Minister of India, post-independence, was a great admirer of Sir MV. Nehruji, himself a great man of learning, wisdom, and vision used to take appointments with Sir MV to discuss on matters of taking India forward on the industrial front. In one of the visits to Bhakranangal Dam, PM Nehru hailed dams as modern ‘temples’ of India!

During one such visit to Sir MV, PM arrived half an hour early but there was no permission to meet him the former! Great Nehru, knowing Sir MV’s values, waited outside. On the dot of time, Sir MV came out with his usual dress for special occasions. Sir MV did mention, it seems, that he could not meet him for the reason, ‘Today I had to take half an hour to dress especially to meet you!’. Just see friends, Sir MV made the PM of the country to wait for half an hour all for the seek of PM himself! Is there any way you could mistake him? So unmistakable were the thoughts, words, and deeds of Sir M Visvesvaraya that no one who knows him, reads about him can help but change!
