‘Giving up, is giving in’

“Many of life’s failures are people who didn’t realize how close they were to success when they gave up”

                                                                          – T A Edison

What keeps us on the job and takes us where we desire to go is persistence.  Lack of persistence is identified as one of the sure signs of failing.  Edison who gave the above great quote is a sterling example for what it takes to struggle, persist and persevere to finally make it. It is said that Edison the great scientist and inventor tried 9996 times to invent candescent bulb. When someone chided him for so many times of ‘failure’, Edison replied with a smile, ‘I learnt that in these many ways one can not invent a bulb’! That is truly the spirit of an inventor.  Lesser mortals would give up when things do not work their way. Why at all things should work our way? To find out how it works is the spirit of enquiry. We need to inculcate this mode of looking at things in all walks of life. Einstein once said ‘I have no intention of being right, I am only interested in finding out whether I am right or not’. Mark the word ‘finding out’. To find out is to keep the process of enquiry open and alive.

How to develop the muscle of not giving up?

  1. Winston Churchill once wrote, ‘Success is moving from failure to failure without losing confidence’.  The first and foremost ingredient of success is enthusiasm.’ Enthu’ in Greek means God. Enthusiasm helps you look for opportunities.
  2. Think and act differently. There are several ways to approaching a situation. Failure is not fatal. Whenever there is a set-back, go through the whole process once again.  Not to give up should be our mission in workplace.
  3. Give yourself a break and resume the task a little while/a few hours later. This cooling period may help you get new ideas, insights, and methods of completing the task.
  4. Discuss your ‘issues’ with others in your own comfort zone. People do not have ‘idea problems’! You have only to ask. The rule is, ’Ask you will get it, Seek you will find it, Knock the door opens’
